The concept of smart cities is multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary in nature. Electric power and energy is a critical piece of this vision. The smart cities concept brings the cyber, physical and social contexts of a large community with the common goal of improving the quality of life. There is an obvious need to conduct fundamental and applied research, build capacity for research, and transfer the research to practice. Among the fundamental advancements are:
1. Data collection and analytics tools using building data, smart meter data, etc.)
2. Demand prediction, response and management
3. Power and energy distribution in smart cities
4. Smart and resilient microgrid solutions
5. Modeling, design, and optimization tools
6. Integrating social and technological challenges for a holistic approach
