The growth in the desire to connect ever greater numbers of distributed energy resources (DER -generation, storage, and flexible loads) is bringing attention not only to the safety and reliable operation of these resources, but the challenges in the processes to configure and integrate them for successful operation with the distribution system. The US Department of Energy's Grid Modernization Initiative has developed a strategic vision for DER interoperability focused on the ease of integration. The process to achieve interoperability involves an alignment of the various stakeholders in the DER integration ecosystem such as distribution systems operators, DER facility owners and operators, technology solutions providers, and the regulators of the marketplace. These stakeholders represent an evolving ecosystem of parties who can all benefit from interoperability agreements. This panel describes the advances being made in the development of roadmaps for DER integration as driven by photovoltaic systems integration in California and Hawaii, and electric vehicle charging integration in Europe.
