Panel Session 04 Aug 2020

This panel will focus on case studies of national and subnational jurisdictions that have employed different approaches to planning the deployment of renewable energy. Representatives from different jurisdictions will discuss institutional attributions for energy planning (and the insertion of renewable energy therein), as well as methodological and processual aspects of the planning exercise. High temporal and spatial resolution of the representation of the power system is important to capture certain operational impacts of renewable energy intermittency—the level of detail of these embedded in the planning exercise will be described, as well as needed modeling advances. Panelists will also discuss the modeling inputs and energy plan modifications required to address aspects including land availability and the impacts of renewable energy deployment over the water and food sectors. Finally, they will approach the role for energy plans (including renewable energy) in market environments, and how to better align planning processes with real-world markets and constraints.
