Panel Session 05 Aug 2020

Power grid of the future needs collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches for research and education. For example, with the deployment of controllers and sensors in power grids, knowledge from control and sensor communities become extremely relevant. Similarly, for planning and operational problems, power community could be benefited from the knowledge of operational research (OR). Novel data analytics and high-performance computing are also being applied in solving power grid problems. Moreover, communication in smart grid is one of the least discussed topics in PES community. In this regard, we bring together experts from various cross-disciplinary areas including control, operational research, sensors, communication, data management, high performance computing, to discuss key challenges in solving problems in power grids. The panel will provide educational opportunities not only by educating power systems researchers on new methods and technologies from other disciplines but also by educating researchers from other domains on specific power grid challenges to motivate further cross-disciplinary collaborations.
