This panel will explore bulk power system oscillations and recent analyses performed by industry to better understand these oscillations. This includes the recently published NERC technical reports on oscillation analyses using wide-area synchronized measurement data from across three interconnections in North America. Forced oscillation events including the January 11th forced oscillation event that caused large power swings across the entire US Eastern Interconnection will be discussed in detail. Operational staff from reliability coordinators will share their practical experience and challenges in dealing with oscillations. Challenges of creating a robust, interconnection-wide oscillation-detection-source-location tool will also be discussed. Finally, international experience of severe oscillation events and mitigation procedure concludes the panel.
