The accuracy of grid model determines the credibility of model-based operations and studies. Due to close coupling among service territories, regional model maintenance requires data exchange and information sharing among different entities. Traditionally, this process is facilitated via bilateral communication and format transformation using customized scripts, which is prone to human errors and tedious maintenance work especially when recurring model update is required. For instance, online EMS model maintenance must be performed by many utilities to bring in external model changes. Thus, CIM Standards are proposed and recommended to enhance power system interoperability so that multi-lateral model exchanges and local customization can be completed accurately and efficiently. This panel will: 1. Deconstruct the CIM Standard and provide information on how CIM Profiles simplify thae adoption and implementation of the standard. 2. Address concerns Academia has presented that the CIM standard is too complex and difficult to teach and used for research. 3. Present information on Open Source CIM based applications and models can be used in teaching and validating CIM solutions.
