This panel will explore the expanding role of safety codes and standards designed to protect the multiple stakeholders from safety related calamities. Recent fires and loss of life in Arizona and Korea have introduced new risks from lithium-ion batteries and other emerging technologies at all levels of the grid environment (transmission, generation, distribution). With the accelerating growth of renewables, DER adds an external element to the equation. What are the defining characteristics of new code requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Codes Commission (ICC) and the National Electric Safety Code (NESC)? How do they interrelate? And what affect will that have on electric grid operators? How do these codes alter testing requirements for approved listing and certification? An analysis of the recent APS fire event will also be presented.
