Power systems are going through a paradigm shift from centralized generation to distributed generation. More and more distributed energy resources (DERs), including renewables, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems, are being integrated into the grid within the Washington, D.C. region. This presents unprecedented challenges to power system stability, reliability, and security. How can we make sure millions of power electronic converters can work together without causing instability? What is the fundamental role of inertia? How can we assure the quality of electric services? Is it really a good idea to control DERs through the communication network, which opens the door for cyberattacks by anybody, at any time, from anywhere? Is it possible to achieve autonomous power systems? The panel will bring together experts from different domains to share their opinions on the challenges and possible solutions on this important and timely problem.
