Multiple microgrids (MGs) operated in a coordinated manner using advanced control and communication technologies are termed as networked MGs. They can provide cost-effective and environment-friendly electric power generated from distributed energy resources (DERs) to meet energy demands while maintaining resilience and reliability of power systems. Currently, the implementations of networked MGs are facing various challenges on the aspects of energy management, control coordination, protection coordination, and operation, due to (1) the limited shared information among microgrid operators and distribution system operators, (2) complex control strategies of DERs, (3) frequent changes of the topologies and operating modes of MGs, and (4) uncertainties caused by load variations and intermittent power supplies. This panel will share lessons learned and best practices on energy management, control coordination, protection coordination, and operation with the Power & Energy Society to promote technologies of networked microgrids and improve efficiency, resiliency, and sustainability of power systems.
