Panel 21 Jul 2022

The proliferation of climate change makes extreme weather events increasingly more common and more severe. Electric utilities around the globe strive to maintain continuity of service to all customers and to promptly restore any component that has suffered an outage. The issues arising due to power outages most times propagate to non-grid factors, including the health of the local community, access to critical facilities and other economic, social and community aspects. With this motivation, this panel will include talks from experts to provide insight on current and emerging measures to increase resilience to major events, such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. The panel will convey the experience of these utilities when assessing damage, calculating the societal impact of the energy not served, and the incorporation of improved design, non-wires alternative, and enhanced weather forecast in their planning.
