Environmental issues over the world are increasing leading to the need for improved energy management in search of sustainable energy systems. The increasing use of renewable energy sources is lowering the traditional generation flexibility level. The system must find new flexibility sources, namely using demand flexibility delivered in the scope of demand response programs and making use of storage. Distributed storage, together with distributed generation, demand response, and electric vehicle management, plays a very relevant role in local energy resource management, namely in energy communities. The complexity of the energy management problem under the new circumstances requires new methods, with Artificial Intelligence bringing promising solutions. Artificial intelligence-based methods and their effective application in rural and urban energy communities is the main focus of this panel session. Interaction among energy communities’ members as well as among different energy communities are also addressed.
