Power system protection is a classical area in power systems, and it presents a conservative nature since the faults have to be cleared rapidly to avoid further spread of disturbances. In order to increase the reliability of this system, backup and monitoring devices are employed. Due to its critical application, computational methods based on classical optimization or intelligent systems hardly ever are mentioned as common applications. This fact brings challenges for the application of optimization methods and automation techniques to protection systems. The experts invited to this panel will give an overview of the latest emerging methods for the formulation and computationally effective solutions of different types of complex optimization and automation methods to protection systems. The panel will have interactive discussions with the audience on several key aspects that include intelligent methods to protection planning, automation and optimization.
