Power systems are undergoing a swift transformation as they strive to integrate renewable energy resources, which are frequently located in remote areas rich in wind and solar potential, while also addressing the challenges posed by extreme events such as storms, heatwaves, and wildfires. Resilience evaluation have become a vital part in planning-based studies particularly composite generation and transmission reliability. Some of the existing challenges and associated tradeoffs are; (1) assessing required transmission system upgrades to cope with added renewable energy projects; (2) proper modeling of HVDC and MTDC system in resilience evaluation studies; and (3) consideration of inter- and intra-regional transmission limitations in energy market. This panel will bring experts and researchers from grid operators, energy regulators, utilities, and research institutes to discuss, share lessons-learned, provide perspectives on current practices to evaluate and improve resilience of electric power grid to achieve new decarbonization initiatives.
