As our reliance on power systems grows, it becomes imperative to ensure their resilience against natural phenomena including Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMD) and its by-product, Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC). GIC can overheat transformers, cause voltage instability, and, in extreme cases, lead to widespread power outages. However, the degree of vulnerability to GIC is not well understood, and it needs the sharing of various expertise in different fields. In this panel, experts from academia and industry will share their experience and the latest developed techniques in assessing and improving power system and equipment resilience to GIC. This panel aims to bridge the gap between research and application. It will help power system operators, utilities, manufacturers, and researchers collaborate and develop innovative strategies to safeguard our power systems and equipment from the potentially devastating impacts of GICs and help comply with NERC TPL-007 standard.
