Power systems globally are going through unprecedented changes, mainly driven by decarbonization targets, leading to increasing penetration of converter interfaced devices, both at transmission and distribution level. Converter interfaced devices have significantly different dynamic behaviour compared to synchronous generators and can lead to the appearance of new dynamic interactions. Such interactions have already started appearing in real networks in different regions of the world, posing challenges in system operation. Better understanding of the level of modelling detail is needed, the devices and states that participate and conditions under which they appear. The panel will explore the behaviour of such interactions, what causes them, under what circumstances they appear, and how they might change with different operating conditions as well as the impact of different control types and structures (e.g. different types of grid forming/following control). The panel will bring together views from power systems, power electronics and from the industrial perspective to discuss the appearance and understanding of such interactions in test networks and real cases. Aspects that will be covered include the level of modelling detail needed to capture different phenomena, approaches to characterize the behaviour of interactions and the implications of using different control structures or modelling assumptions for the network and the converters. Examples of real case studies and real-world events will also be covered.
