Electric mobility is poised to transform the world as we know it. Indeed, we should expect a revolution similar to ones in the past propelled by invention of electricity and, later, electronics. IEEE grew out of these revolutionary steps and is ready for a coordinated move into electrifying transportation. IEEE formed a Transportation Electrification Council, an umbrella effort sponsored by 18 IEEE Societies, thus linking thousands of IEEE members to transportation – over ½ of IEEE membership. This is not surprising as the challenge of electrifying transportation requires a broad range of engineering expertise. The scope of the Council spans all modes of transportation of people and goods – on road, off-road, in the air, and in the water. This includes system design, integration, manufacture, standards for and operation of transportation systems, including: electrical and electronic components; power supplies; drivetrains (electric and hybrid); energy storage; roadway power; electrified auxiliaries; traffic management systems charging and grid interface infrastructure; recycling and disposal; communications and controls; technologies and devices for interaction between vehicles and between moving and stationary systems; networks related to transportation; traffic systems; logistics; models, software, controls and algorithms. Many autonomous driving options, such as fleets and drone delivery systems, will need to be fully integrated into the operator’s business. IEEE is in a unique position to support the entire spectrum of critical needs and several Societies are already pursuing them. This session is designed to highlight examples of engineering knowledge being developed by several IEEE societies and discuss immediate and longer-term needs essential to assure success of this endeavor. The Societies represented by the speakers are supporters of the new IEEE Transportation Electrification Council.
