There is a growing need for higher voltage and higher power high-voltage direct current (HVdc) stations as long-distance power transfer is considered to increase resilience in the power grid as well as enhanced wind integration. In this session, the speakers will be discussing the latest research and development effort in HVdc systems and stations that enhance the ability to transfer power over long distance. The discussion will include talks on stations, control architectures, and example systems in United States. The second part of the session will focus on international experience with multi-terminal dc research and electromagnetic transient (EMT) test benches developed for the same (for evaluating interoperability, stability, reliability, among others using real-time and offline simulation platforms). The session will include speakers from HVdc vendors, national laboratories, US Department of Energy (DOE), R&D centers across the world, among others. The session will include 8 speakers with each speaker presenting for 25 minutes. This session will provide content that power system engineers, researchers, and policy makers will be interested in.
