Abstract: Capacitive sensors for displacement, proximity and pressure sensing are widely deployed in various consumer, medical, automotive, and industrial sectors, with the advantages of zero static power consumption and good compatibility with CMOS circuitry. This tutorial provides an overview of the fundamental principles of capacitive sensor interfaces, as well as the design tradeoffs in terms of accuracy and energy consumption. Recent techniques to achieve low-noise and high-efficiency sensing will also be discussed.
