Modeling and simulation of large power electronic systems and their complex control methods presents a significant challenge (eg, Canyon 2 fire related disturbance affected PV plants). The challenge is associated with developing high-fidelity models of such systems with an acceptable representation of the complete system and simulating the system in a reasonable timeframe. In this tutorial, advanced simulation techniques are discussed to speed-up the simulation of high-fidelity electromagnetic transient (EMT) models of power electronics. The advanced methods include separation of systems utilizing numerical stiffness, time-constants, parallel-in-time methods, and high-performance computing algorithms. To evaluate the performance of the advanced complex control methods associated with the power electronic systems, detailed ac grid models are required of the surrounding region (known as buffer zones) where the power electronics is integrated. The tools that can assist such developments are introduced in this tutorial. Additionally, to identify the impact of such power electronics in large systems, hybrid simulation of EMT- transient stability (TS) models are required with TS models representing the transmission grid. These simulation methods and tools are described with example studies.
