Power grids are evolving rapidly with the integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and smart grid technologies. Since IBRs are naturally non-responsive to system dynamics and sited in remote locations in the network, they have given rise to weak grid related stability issues. Weak grids are typically characterized by low short-circuit strength and low inertia. Therefore, frequency and voltage control are more challenging in low-inertia weak grids compared with traditional synchronous generator-based power grids. This webinar will cover the key characteristics of weak grids and consequences on power system stability. Various technologies (e.g., synchronous condensers, grid-forming converters) available to tackle the weak grid stability issues will be discussed in this webinar with special emphasis on grid-forming converter technology. Finally, the webinar will cover the frequency and voltage control aspects of weak power grids. The attendees of this webinar will receive an overall overview on the weak grid stability issues, and frequency and voltage control aspects of weak grids.
