Abstract:In this talk, ORNL researcher Maximiliano Ferrari will present the transformative potential of microgrids and networked microgrids as an alternative traditional electric utility. This talk will provide an in-depth look at the practical application of tow solar-based, islanded microgrids in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, where the community has collaborated with local and international nonprofits, including Casa Pueblo and the Honnold Foundation, to deliver sustainable and reliable electricity to the town square's businesses. Additionally, Max will address the advantages of network microgrids, showcasing experimental results from a 480V large-scale network microgrid testbed at ORNL featuring both AC and DC interlinks. This discussion will address how networking microgrids can significantly improve resiliency and extend islanded operation, underscoring their role in future energy systems.
