Abstract: With the rapid development on the electrification of vehicles, eyesight is now kept on vessel electrification. This progress speeds up apparently from 2018, when International Maritime Organization (IMO) publishes stringent regulations on exhaust emission control for vessels.
In this presentation, we will first introduce different choices/combination of power source, based on different type of vessels and different requirement. An interesting common-DC electric topology will be presented, which could support different solution of power sources by the common and standard design and components. Some key technical topics like system stability, protection and dynamics features will be discussed as the major technical risks of the new technology.
To understand the relation between the technology and the application, a few pilot projects will be discussed, including a research vessel and two different types of passenger vessels. The configuration of the power system will be introduced, including the topology of the electrical system. System features of the pilot project vessels including the economics, noise, the volume and weight of the power system will be also evaluated and presented.
Biography: Yunxiang Wu is the founder and the managing director of Wuxi Silent Electric System Technology (SEStech) Co., Ltd, which is a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). SEStech is a company working on power system of vessels with innovative technology. SEStech delivered the first common-DC bus diesel-electric propulsion vessel in China, which is a 2200dwt research vessel.
Dr. Wu received his BEng. degree in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University on 2003 and he received his PhD. Degree from Cambridge University on 2008 in Renewable Energy Lab. After his PhD. research, he was working for Generic Electric Power Conversion, as a R&D engineer. Dr. Wu is the invited paper reviewer of IEEE Transaction of Power Electronics.
His research interests include the power electronics and power system to be applied on offshore and inner river vessels. He is a Principal Investigator of the project, Research and engineering of pure battery-powered system for vessel application, funded by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China. This project supports the world's largest battery-powered vessel, which is an inner river cruise vessel with 1300 passengers.
