Using hydrogen for electrification has many challenges. In this issue, Phillip Ansell, Kiruba Haran, and Panagiotis Laskaridis, three researchers active in the field of hydrogen electrification for aviation, present to the readers a comprehensive overview of the many challenges in hydrogen-electric aircraft technologies. The invited articles cover a broad range of topics, including system-level integration impacts at an aircraft conceptual level, storage strategies and cryogenic considerations of liquid hydrogen systems, and novel approaches to component designs for the power and energy drivetrain for hydrogen aircraft. In addition to the seven feature articles on hydrogen-electric aircraft, this issue includes the eighth feature article from Mohammad Shahidehpour and coauthors on using cloud computing to generate aggregated service for small-scale energy storage systems.
