In the past decade, smart grid has evolved into many areas. While the progress has been exciting to watch, it is also creating a confusion for the professionals and researchers that need to keep up to date with the progress and adaptation. The IEEE Smart Grid Committee recognized the need for an approach to bring discipline in categorizing different areas and initiatives of smart grid. The motivation for this categorization for those interested in smart grid is to get a broader view of smart grid in terms of understanding and training in different subject areas as well as continuing research and adaptation to industry applications.
