This paper describes common application challenges when engineers implement medium voltage (MV) smart sensor systems and networks in smart grids. In addition to addressing accuracy, uncertainty, and precision terminologies, this paper introduces a specific conditional accuracy term that addresses overall measurement accuracy of smart sensor systems within a specified range of operating conditions including temperature, humidity, and measurement range. A couple of examples of MV sensors within sensor networks, with conditional accuracy, are provided. A common architecture of smart sensor systems is described based on sensing, measurement, data processing, timing and synchronization, and network communication functions. Several examples of smart sensor system applications are included. Operating influences of conditional accuracy of smart sensor systems are examined including external influences, system design influences, and network influences. End-user driven field testing of smart sensor systems is discussed based on operating conditions in the field. The testing methods and conditions of smart sensor systems will be addressed in more detail IEEE P2681, Guide for Testing Medium Voltage (MV) Smart Grid Sensors and Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) Systems, which is currently, at this time of this publication, being developed.
