The future energy ecosystem will be characterized by a more distributed power system, blurring currently clear lines between producers and users of power. Utilizing distributed generation, responsive loads and automation at the distribution system, the future ecosystem will see an abundance of software and application-based sensors that work autonomously to optimize energy generation and energy use starting at the smallest application all the way towards the largest entity. The discussion will include examples of open source software like VOLTTRON(tm), a DOE-BTO funded platform, and applications of Transactive Energy and Prosumers that utilize interoperable software platforms.
